Temples 2 the Domestic

TEMPLES TO THE DOMESTIC 1 & 2.

For the Clifford Chance/University of the Arts Sculpture prize 2012, I wanted to address and contrast the architectural language of corporate modernism with that of the decorative domestic.
At its most clear and beautiful, modernism affected an allure that was extremely powerful in its purity of design. However, it refused the home owner a way of imprinting something of their own DNA into the structure, without unsettling this purity. The desire to create an environment that reflects our own individual tastes and personal histories and the depersonalized machine aesthetic of modernism became central to my proposal.

The show’s installation was in two halves, with the second takng place in September 2012. The Temples were emptied and re-hung with work made by invited artists in response to the ideas presented above. Co-curated with Justin Hibbs, the show opened in mid-September, continuing on until the close of the show in November 2012.
